This week sees the addition of yet another 15 shows in an assortment of venues and locations across three states. Even as these new shows are announced the band are in the midst of embarking on their “Greatest Hits” tour which is bringing their unique brand of Aussie rock to a large number of regional theatres in New South Wales, Victoria & South Australia

Given that the Brewster – Gleeson – Brewster – Norton – Brewster lineup have already chucked a whole heap of shows under their belt it’s easy to see that this juggernaut of riff-driven loudness has no intention of slowing down.

This week’s tour announcement increases greatly the opportunity for rock lovers to catch the band by adding shows in up-close live music venues across the following locations.

Starting at the Capitol Theatre in Tamworth this Friday, The Angels are about to unleash a frenzy of two hour rock concerts that showcase their huge string of Australian hits.

Now revitalised by the enigmatic front-man Dave Gleeson, the band’s pub-rock classics will once again resonate on the Aussie Rock landscape in that same power-charged manner which first brought them to the forefront of local hard rock history.

Very few bands in this country can make a claim to having so many famous songs tucked firmly under their wing.

Only one of those bands is still pumping out riffs to the audience in the manner to which we have become accustomed. It is for this reason that The Angels have come to be universally accepted as Australia’s Most Enduring Rock Band.

Share with your friends in this epic display of rock-fun at one of these great Australian towns.

When you read deeper into the huge raft of artists, production personnel, fans, businesses and support staff who so willingly gave their time to stage, and to attend, “Adelaide Salutes Chris Bailey” it becomes abundantly clear that the stories of Chris’s exceptional character are in no way inflated.

Adelaide’s Thebarton Theatre, and indeed quite a number of their staff, came on board free of charge to allow the event to find a home with which Chris was very familiar. And so, on Wednesday 17th April 2013, the cream of the local music industry came together not only to raise funds for the family but also to celebrate the life of a great Australian musician and his endless love of live performance.

With Wilbur Wilde as Master Of Ceremonies it really was an excellent, and fun, tribute to a man who always enjoyed a good time through his great sense of humour. Knowing Chris as we did, we know he would have been thrilled that all involved got to enjoy yet another gig and a big old get together simply because he had been in everyone’s lives. It is for this reason that we would like to show our appreciation to all those who joined us in paying their respect to the spirit of the life which Chris had led.

Due to the overwhelming generosity of so many towards this event, we have built a special web page simply to cater for all the thanks and comments that should be passed around.

Please do click here and read on in memory of Chris “Beatle” Bailey.

We lost Chris Bailey, “the original and best bassplayer the Angels ever had” as John has referred to him so often. The Angels always showed an outward affection for Beatle Bailey.

I was lucky enough to be on the other end of what I consider the best kind of rhythm section with Chris, be it in Rock or any musical idiom. Heavy grooves, deep pocket, tight as a rope. Chris kept me absolutely on my toes as a drummer, because he expected the best. He grinned cheekily show after show when we really hit a groove. Chris’ bass playing was effortlessly musical and created a perfect grid that John and Rick’s guitars swam over and my drums could easily marry to. He had feel for days, great time and was a walking text book of the hippest bass lines, licks and runs.

I am blessed to have had one full tour with Chris and a handful of other dates to receive his musical schooling. It is strange how quickly things change, but one suddenly treasures the invaluable short time allotted, to sit in with the best.

Thankfully, he put down every note on Take it to the Streets and is the bottom-end on half the material on our forthcoming album. As ill as he was, he came in to Alberts and laid it down like a champ late last year.

We played three theatre dates in WA the weekend Chris passed away. It was a poignant few days with many song dedications, emotional chats with the audience and raised glasses backstage. Thoughts were with him the following weekend in Sydney at Bankstown and then Taren Point (which felt Chris’ rumble less than a year ago).

The culmination of all of this came with a proper chance to honour Chris’ memory with the enormous “Adelaide Salutes Chris Bailey” concert. John took charge of putting together this event and had months of endeavour seeing it through. 1800 friends and fans turned out at Adelaide’s Thebarton Theatre. The Angels, Jimi Barnes, Ian Moss, Diesel, Gangajang, Don Walker, Phil Small, James Reyne, Tracy Kingman, Swanee and Peter Head were just some of the performers who’s decades of personal connection with Chris brought them to the fore. Countless musicians, crew, photographers and drivers gave their efforts. Countless Adelaide businesses, big and small gave their resources. All of it, importantly, will make a contribution to the life of Chris’ little 3 year old boy, Ollie, looked after by Chris’ wife, Josie.

As Chris said “it was a hell of an excuse for a party” with his typical dry humour. A party it was. Still though, the pathos of it hit me as I exited the stage at the end of the night’s final set. I didn’t expect to feel that sudden bittersweet sadness after what was a great celebration with a group of talented musicians and a roaring audience. It’s the moment where all the weeks of commitment to the cause are suddenly over and you think only of the guy who isn’t there to see what all the fuss over him was about.

At least we got our chance to say goodbye to Chris.

Nick

Could it be that there were so many fans turning up to the Taren Point Hotel that front-man Dave Gleeson found it necessary to “hide” from the throng? Whatever the f&#k is going on in this photo it’s obvious that the current studio album tour is still attracting lovers of fine Aussie Riff Rock.

Next weekend offers two more shows on the East Coast of New South Wales after The Angels completed their visit to Western Australia over the previous week.

After many weeks of palliative care, Chris slipped away peacefully this morning at around 1am. The band’s thoughts are now with Chris’s family.

Known for his fantastic skills as a musician, his good nature and also a great sense of humour which persisted right through his recent illness, Chris will be remembered by countless fans and industry members as a mainstay of the live music scene from his early local performances in Adelaide during the 1970′s right through to the present day.

While being nursed through his illness over the last eight months, Chris had handed his duties as bass guitarist for The Angels to his long time friend Sam Brewster.

Not being a man to take things lying down though, Chris appeared on stage with the band at The Bridge Hotel in Sydney as recently as October in 2012.

When asked in recent times about his career in music Chris remarked “At the ripe old age of 59, I still look forward to many and varied gigs as a bass player and vocalist… I also still firmly believe in the power of music to enlighten and brighten our lives!”

Anyone who has ever worked with Chris Bailey will remember him as a friendly influence who always attempted to keep the business of playing music as simple, fun and fruitful as humanly possible.

The band will continue to tour in Chris’s honour as he himself had personally requested. This in itself is just another testament to the mark of the man with Chris having been renowned for a life long unswerving dedication to the motto “…the show must go on!”

You can visit a special page here on the website which contains a large portfolio of photos spanning Chris’s long and happy journey across both the Australian and International music landscape.

Since the album debuted at #7 on the Australian ARIA Charts the band have now been continually touring in response to constant requests for live performances at venues across the country.

Taking them from the from one side of Australia to the other, The Angels will be playing the first week of April in West Australian venues such as The Astor Theatre in the Perth suburb of Mt Lawley.

The last year has been littered with gigs ranging from small up-close pub venues right through to an enormous outdoor show at the Clipsal 500 V8 Race which saw the audience numbering the tens of thousands.

No stranger to venues of any size, The Angels recently proved again that they are a hit with the crowds after completing a run of very successful outdoor shows for the A Day On The Green Summer Invasion Tour. After seeing the band being fronted by Dave Gleeson at these gigs, concert promoter Mick Newton put it in plain English when he proclaimed… “The Angels killed it!! It’s as simple as that.”

So, if you’re in the beautiful west of this country at the start of April then come and enjoy a full dose of that same energy in one of these great venues ….
