13th August
I couldn’t sleep last night. The adrenaline is pumping through my veins. “ This is it folks…Over the top” I couldn’t f*#king wait. Ness and I were picked up at Melbourne airport after flying from Sydney by our lovely driver, Katrina. We were taken to our hotel in St Kilda and settled in.
Night came quick. Katrina picked us up again and drove us to the Chelsea Heights Hotel gig. We were given “Access All Areas” passes which were hung around our necks. Ben Turner, The Angels tour manager introduced himself and we met the rest of the road crew. They were very welcoming and are an awesome bunch of guys. A big shout out to Blicka, Athol, Alex, Chris…give me a call, Hendo, Dan and the others. Also to Luke and Clayton who we met in the crowd.
We were shown The Angels dressing room and back entrance to the stage and venue. There was a sign on the entrance door saying Angels only, no one else. We could go in and out this door anytime. Cool. I bought a JD and a vodka and checked out the merchandise. The Angels hoodies were too good to pass up so I got one.
Ness and I also met the band members, Doc, Buzz, Chris, John and Rick. All I could think of was “I’m so pleased to meet you, I’m so pleased to meet you, to have this opportunity” What a f*#king opportunity this was. Unbelievable. The support band, Skarlet Blue, who were on the Melbourne leg, were really good. “She’s a Mole” was a cool song. They really got the crowd pumped for the main event.
The lights went off, the intro music started. Cheers were coming from the sold out crowd. The guitars started cranking and No Exit was here. The classic songs kept coming. The boys were in fine form. “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face” again went off. The mandatory “No way, Get F*#ked, F*#k Off” chorus was sung loudly by the crowd. Ness and I watched from the left side on the floor for awhile. We decided to use our passes and go check them out from side of stage. It was unreal to be on stage with The Angels whilst they were performing. I looked into the crowd and could see nothing but fans packed to the back wall. During “Marseilles”, Doc pulled a few lucky ladies onto the stage. They had a bit of a dance and parted with a goodbye kiss. The 15 song set list was delivered with style.
It’s awesome to see the original band members working in harmony again. “Out Of The Blue” was an added bonus during the encore. Then it was time for the last song of the night, the almighty “Devil’s Gate” with John on harmonica and Doc and his double devil signs. What a concert.
After the show we went backstage to the dressing room. The band autographed some of my CD’s and I received The Angels autographed guitar. Fuck yeah. Doc told me that he doesn’t have a favourite Angels album, he loves them all. He likes to listen to Mozart and unwind. We hung around for awhile taking in the atmosphere. At 2am we were driven back to the hotel by Kat.
